Hospice Group Honors CHC-NE

Community Health Charities of Nebraska received the highest honor given by Nebraska Hospice and Palliative Care Partnership the group's recent annual banquet in Lincoln. The State Impact Award recognizes CHC-NE's contributions to the work of NHPCP and end-of-life care over the last year. Representing CHC-NE and receiving the award were Michelle Grossman, President and CEO, and Cathy Hietbrink, Lincoln Director.

NHPCP, one of CHC-NE's 18 member health charities, is a collaborative effort of more than 50 organizations with an interest in good care for terminally and chronically ill Nebraskans. NHPCP includes Nebraska hospices, community end-of-life coalitions, and other health and elder-care organizations.

Thank You Omaha and Lincoln Area United Way Donors!

A special thanks to workplace donors who contributed to the United Way of the Midlands and United Way of Lincoln and Lancaster County campaigns. Community Health Charities of Nebraska is a fundraising partner with these two United Way federations, and our health agency members benefit from United Way contributions made to the United Way Fund. Thanks to all who participated in their workplace campaigns.

Thank You Nebraska!
Many, many thanks to all of our campaign volunteers statewide! With about 80 percent of CHC-NE workplace giving campaigns complete across Nebraska, the 2008 Campaign Partnership for Health is running about the same in gifts and pledges as last year. Given the challenges in the economy, this is a good response to charitable giving to health this year. We are thankful to all the employees at workplaces large and small for their donations. Thanks also to the business owners and managers who see the value of workplace giving, and offer a campaign as an added benefit to their work force.

July is Juvenile Arthritis Awareness Month
Juvenile arthritis (JA) refers to any form of arthritis or an arthritis-related condition that develops in children or teenagers who are less than 18 years of age. Juvenile arthritis is one of the most common chronic childhood diseases that often goes undetected or is misdiagnosed. Approximately 294,000 children under the age of 18 are affected by pediatric arthritis and rheumatologic conditions. The Arthritis Foundation created the Juvenile Arthritis Alliance in 2006 to assist patients and families who are living with this disease.

My mother and I were close. I looked up to her not only as a mother, but also as a friend, a big sister. She was my favorite person to be with. I will never forget when she told me she had breast cancer. I was nine. She battled the cancer for six years. We were blessed with a lot of help from people in the church and community, but a lot of her personal care fell to me, because I was home-schooled.
